1. Q: What is a domain name? A: A domain name is a name that is entered into a computer browser (eg., FireFox or Internet Explorer) as part of a website or other URL, or an e-mail address.
2. Q: What does TLD stand for and what does it mean? A: TLD stands for top-level domain and is the last part of an internet domain name; that is, the letters which follow the final dot of any domain name. For example, in the domain name www.Qwik.ca, the top-level domain is "ca" (or CA, as domain names are not case-sensitive).
3. Q: How do I find out if my domain name is available? A: You will need to do a WHOIS on the name. This is an internet search for the availability and will tell you if the domain name is available or not. If it isn't available, it may tell you who owns the name at the moment. Some companies offer WHOIS protection (when doing a WHOIS on a domain name, you won't see the actual owner's information but rather generic information of the registrar. If you require help with registering your domain name or have any questions, please contact us.
4. Q: Should I consider ".ca" over a ".com"? A: This is a great question and asked often. We answer this question by registering both if they are available. The ".com" is the most popular at the moment and the one that most people are familiar with. Saying that, the ".ca" is Canada's TLD. If you are a Canadian company or citizen, we recommend registering the ".ca" version of your domain name.
5. Q: For how long can I register a domain name? A: You can register a domain name for up to 10 years. We recommend to all clients that they originally register their domain name(s) for one year. We do this because you don't want to lock up a domain name if you don't plan on doing anything with it or you decide to change the name. The cost for 1 year is far less than 10 years. After the first year, you can renew the domain name for an additional year or multiple years. If you register your domain name through Jammicron and our registrar, we will notify you before the domain name is up for renewal.
6. Q: Can I register a number of domain names and have them pull up the same website? A: Yes! This is an ideal situation and we have a large number of clients who own multiple domain names. For NO EXTRA charge we will make them aliases for the default or main domain name. That way, if someone does type any of the alias domain names, they will be redirected to the default domain. This is seamless and doesn't require you to do anything. The servers take care of this.
7. Q: What is a domain name registrar? A: A domain name registrar is a company accredited, either by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), or by a national ccTLD authority or both, to register internet domain names.
8. Q: Who is CIRA? A: The Canadian Internet Registration Authority (CIRA) (French: Autorité canadienne pour les enregistrements Internet ACEI) is a non-profit Canadian corporation that is responsible for operating the ".ca" country code top-level domain. It was incorporated in 1998 and assumed operation of ".ca" on December 1, 2000 from the University of British Columbia. CIRA is based in Ottawa, Ontario.
9. Q: How do I get my domain name username and password? A: Please contact Jammicron if you need a hand retrieving your domain username and password?
10. Q: Can I transfer my domain name to Jammicron's registrar so Jammicron can manage it for me? A: Yes, you can transfer your domain name to Jammicron and our registrar. Please contact us for additional information.
